- Baldwin alum and current Colorado Buffalo Micah Welch (29) throws a stiff arm in his team’s win against Colorado State Saturday. Welch saw the first carries of his college career and led the team in rushing with 65 yards on nine carries.
It didn’t take too long for Baldwin High product Micah Welch to get rid of the zeroes on his stat sheet at Colorado.
Playing for Coach Prime’s Buffaloes, the true freshman running back wearing No. 29 received the first carries of his college career in Saturday’s 28-9 win over in-state rival Colorado State. Welch was the team’s leading rusher with 65 yards on nine carries, a total that was also a team-high. He added on two receptions for nine yards. The 5-9, 205-pound ballcarrier’s best run of the day came on his first carry as a collegiate student-athlete as he went 25 yards. His rushing yardage output accounted for over half of what the Buffaloes put up Saturday. The team finished with 109 yards on the ground.

It was just Welch’s third game suiting up for CU. The early opportunity to carry the football was likely a product of what he’s shown his coaches in practice coupled with an injury sustained by another player at the position. Carries for running backs are often few and far between on the Buffalo offense that features Shedeur Sanders, son of head coach Deion Sanders, at quarterback and WR/DB Travis Hunter, another Peach State product like Welch, as a deadly option on the outside. Perhaps the former Baldwin Brave is the jolt the Colorado run game needs moving forward.
Welch and the 2-1 CU football team are back on their home field in Boulder Saturday facing Baylor in an 8 p.m. eastern start. The game is being broadcast by FOX.
