Bellflower’s double in the ninth gives GCSU 3-2 win over Newberry

Brandon Bellflower’s two-out double to right field in the bottom of the ninth gave Georgia College & State University a 3-2 non-conference baseball victory over Newberry College Wednesday (May 1) afternoon at John Kurtz Field.

The Bobcats improved to 29-20, while the Wolves fell to 24-26. GCSU will return action Friday (May 3) when they host half of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. The Bobcats, who are the No. 2 seed, will face No. 7 seed Augusta University in the first round of the double-elimination tournament at 2 p.m.

With the game tied at 2, Gabriel Wuerth started the winning rally with an one-out single through the right side and moved to second on a ground out. Bellflower sent the first pitch he saw into the right field corner to drive in the winning run.

Newberry took advantage of an error in the first inning to score two unearned runs. GCSU cut the deficit in half in its half of the second. Cam McNearney stroked a double to right and scored on Masonn Poole’s RBI single through the left side.

The Bobcats tied the game at 2 in the sixth. Evan Cowan led off the inning being hit by a pitch and then moved up two bases on a wild pitch. McNearney later scored him on a deep sacrifice fly to center field.

Jake Beaver (1-0) earned the win with s scoreless ninth inning.

The Bobcats mustered seven hits with Wuerth and Braeden Smith each posting two apiece.
