Fly-in success shows airport potential

The Baldwin County Regional Airport played host to a first of its kind local event last weekend. The airport hosted it’s first-ever fly-in, free and open to the public.

Given the success of the recent event, the local community should hope this certainly won’t be the last of its kind.

Members of the Southern Navion Air Group (SNAG) put on the event, which featured the single-engine planes similar to the P-51 Mustangs used in World War II.

This event was not only an educational opportunity for locals of all ages, it also drew visitors to the community.

Pilots took to the skies for a little friendly competition while onlookers enjoyed the show. Visitors also had the opportunity to interact with the pilots. This kind of event certainly doesn’t come about every day in Baldwin County, but it demonstrates the potential for other events like it to come in the future.

Hopefully, airport officials can capitalize on the success of this first event and look to make it an annual attraction that grows in years to come. Not only that, perhaps this can be a springboard to the local airport hosting other events of this kind.

Kudos to the organizers of this event and the success of this first effort.

This event was unique for the local community in that it combined a since of history and nostalgia with the still-untapped resources and amenities the Baldwin County Regional Airport has to offer in hopes of showcasing the airport to a wider audience.

And that’s certainly a great thing for the community at-large.
