A 33-year-old Hancock County man was still being sought Monday in connection with a litany of charges including aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer following a vehicle chase Sunday morning in Baldwin County.
The suspect was identified as Robert Wayne Stevenson of the 900 block of Lake Sinclair Drive, Sparta, according to an incident report filed by Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Alex Rickey.
Stevenson is wanted on the following charges related to his latest run-in with law enforcement officers: aggravated assault on a peace officer, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, reckless driving, driving on the wrong side of the road, speeding in a construction zone, speeding and failure to stop at a stop sign.

Rickey said in his report that while he was patrolling the area of South Elbert and East Hancock streets shortly after 10 a.m., he spotted a Nissan Pathfinder being driven by Stevenson. The deputy said he knew Stevenson was wanted on active felony warrants.
Rickey said he radioed fellow Deputy Dawson Smith about the situation and that he later made it to that same area.
“Upon seeing Smith’s patrol car, Stevenson accelerated toward South Elbert Street and made an abrupt turn, traveling south,” Rickey said. “Deputy Smith and I activated our blue lights and sirens in an attempt to initiate a traffic stop with the vehicle.”
Stevenson later turned onto East Green Street and accelerated at a high rate of speed, Rickey said. The driver being chased by deputies then went down South Liberty Street and traveled along West Washington Street.
“The driver ran the stop sign at the intersection of of W. Washington Street and S. Wayne Street,” Rickey said. “I attempted to catch up with the vehicle, reaching speeds of 70 miles per hour before Lt. Nick Goddard ordered the termination of the pursuit.”
Rickey said he later spotted the Nissan Pathfinder traveling through an unoccupied construction zone at a high rate of speed.

“The Nissan struck several barricades and continued south onto Irwinton Road,” Rickey said.
The deputy said he later talked with Sgt. Raumando Thompson, who is assigned to the Georgia State Patrol post in Milledgeville. Rickey said Thompson told him the driver of the SUV passed him at 102 mph in a posted 40 mph speed zone.
“Trooper Thompson stated that the driver had attempted to ram his patrol car,” Rickey said. “Trooper Thompson was forced to pull off into a ditch to avoid a collision.”
A short time later, Sgt. Thompson located the SUV. It was discovered unoccupied on the 100 block of Thomas Field Road.
Anyone with information concerning the whereabouts of Stevenson is asked to call the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office at 478-445-4891.
