(Editor’s note: The version of this story that ran in our Wednesday, May 14 edition stated that John Milledge’s home baseball series against Brookwood would begin Friday when it will in fact begin Thursday. Also in that story the girls soccer match at Deerfield was reported to be played Friday. That game will instead be Thursday.)

The school calendar is winding down, which means spring sports seasons are as well.

John Milledge Academy baseball and soccer teams have their state playoff seedings and assignments. They’ve had some time to prep and put their best feet forward as they seek that coveted state championship.

The Trojan baseball team entered the Georgia Independent Athletic Association Class AAA bracket as the No. 4 seed out of 12, meaning JMA had a first-round bye. The 20-8 Trojans under interim head coach Justin Mills later this week will play 12th-seeded Brookwood, who upset No. 5 Deerfield-Windsor in a three-game series that went the distance. DW dominated Game 1 10-0, but Brookwood bounced back to win Game 2 9-6 then finale 10-8.

The second-round matchup between JMA and Brookwood, which is also the quarterfinals, is slated to begin with two games Thursday and Game 3 Friday, if necessary.

All baseball contenders are hoping to keep going through the end of May and reach the championship round being played at Synovus Park in Columbus, home of the Atlanta Braves double-A affiliate the Columbus Clingstones.

John Milledge might have to go through top-seeded Frederica in order to get there. The Knights of St. Simons Island are squaring off against Tiftarea in the quarters.

On to the soccer field, the 10-7 JMA girls enter their bracket as the No. 6 seed matched up against No. 3 Deefield-Windsor. Their Thursday contest in Albany will actually be a rematch as DW defeated the Lady Trojans 3-1 back on April 24.

It’s been a somewhat frustrating year for the John Milledge boys soccer team. Those Trojans own a 3-11-2 record with eight of those 11 losses by two goals or less. Even with the high loss count, the JMA boys are into the postseason as the seventh seed matched up against No. 2 Brookwood (10-1). The Warriors’ lone loss came in a 4-3 decision against Atkinson County, a perennially strong GHSA program. The JMA-Brookwood playoff matchup is slated for May 17 down in Thomasville.
