Warm weather and sunny skies are synonymous with this time of year in our region, and in recent years, so too are the fresh, regionally grown options available at the local farmer’s markets.

Milledgeville is fortunate to have options for area residents to choose from when it comes to farmer’s markets.

The Milledgeville Market runs from April through October at the downtown pavilion from 3 to 6 p.m. every Tuesday. Additionally, the Green Market from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays at the pavilion.

These markets not only provide greater accessibility to locally and regionally grown produce and products, they also help support local farmers and entrepreneurs. They offer fresh baked goods, locally-grown and handmade items, providing greater exposure to local farmers and vendors to showcase their products.

Seeing fresh produce first-hand outside of a grocery store also helps educate young people about where our food comes from and the nutrition it provides.

Milledgeville is fortunate to have local, accessible resources where residents can stop by and handpick their own tomatoes, herbs and breads on the way home from work and have it on the dinner table in the same evening if they choose. Even beyond that, the market allows the next generation of locals with purchasing power to see food more closely to its original source, which could potentially go a long way in helping to foster better nutrition choices in their futures.

The items are all regionally, if not locally produced, and another way to promote the many aspects of life and community in Baldwin County.

If you’ve never stopped by the local farmer’s markets, make a concerted effort to check them out this summer. The markets are a great means through which to promote wellness and enhance the quality of life for Milledgeville and Baldwin County.
