An executive with Freedom Fireworks in Dublin, along with Milledgeville city officials, has publicly apologized for what was termed a disappointing July Fourth fireworks event last weekend.

The company has also offered a full refund.

The show, which drew thousands to view the display, disappointed many, according to comments on social media platforms.

“I want to officially apologize for the fireworks setting on Friday,” said Milledgeville Mayor Mary Parham-Copelan. “We went a different route, but we do apologize for any inconvenience or shortcomings on the fireworks.”

The mayor said hopefully next year’s local Independence Day celebration will bring about a much better show.

City Manager Hank Griffeth also commented on the event during his report to city council.

“The mayor did mention our issue with our fireworks contractor from Friday night,” Griffeth said. “I want to mention that our chief of staff Melba Hilson-Butts had this contractor on the phone Friday night after she contacted me.”

The city manager said Butts spoke to the company official again Monday morning.

Griffeth said city officials received an email from the Freedom Fireworks official Tuesday morning. Griffeth read the statement aloud at Tuesday’s meeting.

“The email states that after conducting interviews with our onsite shoot team at the July Fourth event and reviewing the video from the team, I just want to extend my sincerest apology to you and to the entire city that entrusted us with this community event,” Griffeth read.

The email was sent to city officials by Ryan N. Wells, president of Freedom Fireworks of Dublin.

“Attached is our official apology letter and the steps we will be taking as a company to reconcile this matter,” Wells stated in the letter. “Please extend this letter to the city council, the mayor and any concerned citizen.

“On behalf of myself, the president of Freedom Fireworks and the entire team, I would like to extend our sincerest apologies for the disappointment surrounding our recent fireworks display that took place on July Fourth. We understand that many of you were looking forward to a memorable celebration, and we deeply regret that the event did not meet your expectations.”

Wells said in the statement that his company takes full responsibility for the issues.

“As a company committed to delivering excellence and community enjoyment, we recognize that we fell short this time,” Wells said. “In light of this, we are offering a full refund of the amount of $13,500 to the city of Milledgeville. Additionally, to demonstrate our commitment to making things right, we are extending a 50% discount to any upcoming fireworks display hosted by the city or any of its affiliates.”

Wells said he and his company were taking steps to ensure that future events reflect the high standards that the city of Milledgeville and its residents and visitors deserve.

“We are grateful for your feedback and continued support,” Wells said. “Thank you for the opportunity to serve you and we hope to restore your trust in us.”
