Letter to the Editor

In today’s divisive political landscape, the urgency of now demands a candidate who transcends party lines and embodies the values of integrity, experience, and compassion. In this critical moment, my godfather, Floyd L. Griffin, stands out as exactly that kind of leader. As he runs for the Georgia State House District 149 seat, I urge you to recognize the importance of this moment and consider his candidacy.

A Leader Who Understands Women’s Concerns

Dad’s lifelong commitment to service reflects his dedication to the people of Georgia, including the women in our community. He has always been a steadfast advocate for women’s rights, not just in rhetoric but in action. He believes in the fundamental right to access comprehensive healthcare, including reproductive services, and has pledged to oppose any policies that would infringe upon a woman’s right to make decisions about her own body. In an era when these rights face increasing threats, my dad stands as a reliable ally for all women in Georgia.

But his commitment goes beyond policy. He understands the daily struggles women face — whether it’s balancing careers and family, securing quality childcare, or ensuring a safe and prosperous community. His experience and empathy make him uniquely qualified to represent the needs and values of all women in District 149.

A Proven Record of Service and Leadership

Dad’s dedication to public service began with his military career. In 1967, he joined the United States Army, serving with distinction in the Vietnam War as a helicopter pilot. His leadership skills were evident early on, and they only grew stronger as he broke barriers and made history. In 1994, he became the first African American elected in a rural legislative district with a majority of white voters, and in 2000, he was elected as the first African American Mayor of Milledgeville. These accomplishments show his ability to bridge divides, build consensus, and serve the needs of all constituents, regard less of race, gender, or political affiliation. His tenure in the Georgia Senate was marked by effective leadership on multiple key committees, including the powerful Rules Committee and the Interstate Cooperation Committee, which he chaired for two terms. Dad’s ability to lead, listen, and collaborate is precisely what we need in today’s political environment.

A Commitment to Community and Education

My dad and mom, Mrs. Nathalie Griffin, have always prioritized education and community service. Mom has been a constant partner in these efforts, sharing her husband’s passion for education and community development, and working tirelessly to ensure that every child has the opportunity to succeed. Their generosity is evident in their work with local educational institutions, where dad served on the Boards of Trustees for Georgia College & State University, Georgia Military College, and Tuskegee University. Together, my parents established a $10,000 endowed scholarship with the Baldwin County Charter School Foundation of Excellence, where dad is a charter member and served as the board’s chair. Additionally, my parents created a $25,000 endowment scholarship at Tuskegee University to provide opportunities for young people to excel. They are also financial donors to the Georgia College & State University Foundation scholarship fund, further demonstrating their unwavering commitment to supporting educational opportunities for students in our community. Dad understands the dangers of dismantling the current educational system as we know it. Such changes could negatively impact all students, including exceptional students who require speech and occupational therapy, ESOL services, and those identified as gifted. He is committed to ensuring that all students, regard less of their needs, experience positive educational outcomes.

During his tenure as Mayor of Milledgeville, my parents initiated financial support for the Boys and Girls Club of Baldwin and Jones Counties, generously donating a percentage of his salary to sustain and expand its programs. Even after dad left office, they continued their support through generous contributions. When he is elected to the Georgia State House, my parents have pledged to donate 20% of dad’s legislative salary to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Baldwin, Jones, and East Macon Counties.

A Vision for a Stronger, Fairer Georgia

Dad’s vision for Georgia House District 149 is one where every eligible voter has access to the ballot box, where veterans are honored and supported, and where women’s rights are fiercely protected. His expertise in building construction and procurement management gives him the tools to address the economic and infrastructural challenges facing our district. More importantly, his track record shows he can work across party lines to achieve meaningful results that benefit all Georgians. For these reasons and more, I urge you to support my dad, Floyd L. Griffin, for Georgia State House District 149. Together, we can help elect a leader who truly represents us all.
