Joseph Hinton said he was born and raised in construction, with some time away for a stint in the military. After a nine-year break related to his military service, Hinton started his first company — a handyman business located in Alabama, the home of Hinton’s last duty station.

After some time and additional ventures, Hinton founded Hinton Construction about three years ago. Originally, the plan for Hinton Construction was to naturally focus on, well, construction, but Hinton said that the business quickly found another niche: deck construction.
“Decks, we’ll do from the ground, whatever needs to be done,” Hinton said.
Hinton Construction specializes in custom decks, using high quality materials such as Trex and Moisture shield composites and premium woods. Additionally, the business also offers remodeling services for smaller projects such as bathrooms, garages and basements.
“We’re really big on quality. The bigger we go, the harder it is to guarantee quality, because you have to get a lot more subcontractors in,” he said. “Whereas, right now we do most of everything in house. As long as we can keep it smaller, we can control quality and make sure we’re putting out a good product.”
Hinton said the smaller projects help keep construction interesting. He it is not uncommon to lose focus when working on a bigger project for an extended period.
“With us keeping smaller, the longest we’re on a project is a month and a half to two months at the most, whereas most of the time it’s just a few weeks,” Hinton said. “So, constantly being on new projects, even though typically they’re decks, almost every deck has its own nuances and is slightly different, or what the customer wants is slightly different. That’s kind of what helps keep it interesting.”

Hinton prides himself on strong business customer service, which he said sets him apart.
The focus on deck construction happened by accident. Hinton replied to an inquiry on Facebook about building a deck, and before that project was finished, he had two more jobs lined up.
“It just snowballed from there. We’re six months into it and I was like ‘Man, it seems like all we do is build decks, let’s keep doing this,’” Hinton said.
