‘Celebration of Life Service’ to be held for Mullins

Richard “Boo” Mullins Jr. will be remembered at a Celebration of Life Service Sunday afternoon at Georgia College’s Centennial Center in Milledgeville.

Mullins, who served as the District 5 member of Milledgeville City Council for 21 years and was a retired firefighter captain with Baldwin County Fire Rescue, died Saturday at his mother’s home in Milledgeville. He was 64.

Mullins’ body will lie in state at the GC Centennial Center beginning at 11:45 a.m. Sunday until just before the funeral service, which begins at 1 p.m.

The public is invited to pay their respects to the longtime city government leader on Saturday at Peoples Funeral Home. Visiting hours will be held from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. The funeral home is located at 950 N. Clarke St. in Milledgeville.

Interment services will be held privately for immediate family only on Monday, May 2, at The Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery near Milledgeville.

Mullins, who was affectionately known the nickname, “Boo,” was a graduate of Baldwin High School. After graduation, he joined the Army and served until 1981 when he was honorably discharged.

He returned home where he went to work as a firefighter with Milledgeville Fire Rescue Services for four years before he left the city fire department to work at Baldwin County Fire Rescue. Mullins rose to the rank of captain and served the residents of his beloved county for nearly 20 years.

While working as a county fire official, Mullins sought political office for the first time. He was a candidate in a special election for the District 5 seat on Milledgeville City Council and won the election.

He went on to serve on city council for nearly 22 years.

During his time on city council, Mullins was a member of the Middle Georgia Regional Commission in Macon. He was also a longtime member of the Milledgeville-Baldwin County Branch of the NAACP, as well as the Georgia Municipal Association.

Mullins was preceded in death by his father, Richard Mullins Sr.

He is survived by his mother, Ophelia Sanford-Mullins, of Milledgeville; a daughter, Kelly Mullins, of Fayetteville; a son, Jason Mullins and his wife, Tatyana, of Augusta; his grandson, Brady Mullins; a longtime devoted friend in Denese Shinholster, who served with him for many years on Milledgeville City Council; a sister, Regina Kerbo and her husband, Clifford, of Milledgeville; two nieces, Kimberly Harris and Kendra Evans; and several devoted friends, whom he enjoyed spending time with. Among them were Perry Harper, Darrell Wilson, Vernon Reeves, Larry Simmons, Johnny Thorpe, and Thomas Stephens.

Mullins also had a number of other loving family members and friends.
