RaTesia Chatman opened HC Legacy Insurance in November. She has been a licensed insurance agent since 2015.

Throughout her life, RaTesia “Ritta” Chatman has faced adversity and managed to keep moving forward. She’s lived a majority of her in Milledgeville and has worked as a licensed insurance agent since 2015. Now, the wife and mother of four is embracing the new challenge of opening her own business, HC Legacy Insurance.

The inspiration for starting her own business came from a conversation that Chatman had with her late mother a few months before she passed away due to COVID-19 in January 2021.

“We were just kind of reviewing the revenue that I had brought into the office that I was working in,” she recalled. “I was just like ‘Wow, I did really good and I’m so proud of myself,’ and her statement was ‘If you can do that for someone else, imagine what you could do for yourself’.”

After her mother’s death, she said that she took that advice to heart and ran with it.

Chatman opened HC Legacy insurance, named not only after her but also for her late parents, Capt. Adortha Harris and Marjorie Harris, in November 2021. Opening up in Milledgeville made the most sense to Chatman since she and most of her clientele call the area home.

“They already know who Ritta is,” she said, referring to her clients. “So, I said let’s just do it in Milledgeville and see where it goes outside of Milledgeville.”

Both the community and her clients have been quite supportive, according to Chatman.

HC Legacy Insurance assists customers with finding information and helps them obtain the home, auto and life insurance policies that are best for their needs. Though Chatman originally only provided one insurance carrier when she began working, once HC Legacy opened, she branched out and now provides three.

“To provide multiple insurance carriers means that I have multiple opportunities to help my customers save more money,” she said. “So, that for me, was a no-brainer, when it was offered.”

Working with HC Legacy is a unique experience for customers. That uniqueness goes beyond their ability to save more money.

“We like to share our knowledge and we also do the work for you. Those are the top things that we strive for — making sure our customers know exactly what they have, why they have it, and what they need to do with it, how it works,” Chatman said. “We also gather information from our customers in regard to who the carrier is they have now, what type of coverage they have now, and we put it in our rater. Our rater basically lets us know that we can save this customer this amount of money here. So, having multiple carriers, I’m able to put one little piece of information in, and for the state of Georgia, I get all the information that they have, and it shows me the best route to take for the best coverages with the best rates.”

There are several aspects that Chatman enjoys about running her business, one of which is flexibility. Her family and her community play a big role in why she does what she does and they also keep her going every day.

“I want people to see that no matter what happens in your life if you just keep pushing toward your dreams, anything is possible.”
