Our community is blessed with cultural experiences

Next week, the American theater classic, Tennessee Williams’ “A Streetcar Named Desire” will be brought to a local stage for audiences to enjoy courtesy the Georgia College Department of Theatre and Dance.

The production is slated to run Wednesday through Sunday in Russell Auditorium.

The performance is one of many college fine arts productions put on each year, yet many of us may be unaware of them. We shouldn’t forget that the local colleges not only provide tremendous academic resources for local students and the community at-large, but another benefit is the cultural influence they have locally.

Just last year, Georgia College’s theatre program was named among the best in the nation — the only university in the state to be included on the list of “Best Theatre Colleges in Every State” put together by Onstage Blog. The state’s flagship liberal arts university hosts numerous noted writers and scholars, musicians and stage performances each year that are often open to the public. They are also often free or reasonably priced. Not very many communities can say that they have access to these kinds of cultural programs and events on a regular basis. In fact, many people travel out of town and often pay more to see noteworthy performances of this caliber.

Take advantage of these cultural opportunities by attending a show. Check out this year’s schedule of performances on the Georgia College website. Help support this valuable cultural influence within the community and celebrate the arts.
