The Teen Club, as part of the Twin Lakes Library System's Summer Reading Club, and Reference Supervisor Dabney Kinser do candy science experiments to finish up the science themed reading club experience.

The Summer Reading Club (SRC) at the Twin Lakes Library System finished a science-themed journey this week.

Children, teens and adults sparked reactions with literary elements from May 27 to July 16.

Library Outreach Coordinator Sarah Wilson-Davis Hamil said more than 1,200 people signed on this summer.

Even the state library system director complimented the Milledgeville facility’s energy and participation levels.

Kids and adults exercised their brains, while also gaining new friends in the process.

The SRC kicked off May 28 with the science and chemistry program led by Dr. Doug Pohl, a retired chemistry professor from Georgia College.

The Teen SRC had its own kickoff party that afternoon and celebrated by building mini-robots out of computer parts and recycled materials.

Story Times occurred four times a week on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Wonderful Wednesdays featured exciting programs led by various performers, such as Magician Ken Scott and Pete Griffin from the Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center.

Along with cool movies, kids had fun making a “bot-mobile” on July 2 for a drop-in craft.

The Teen SRC enjoyed Wacky Wednesdays and Theater Thursdays this year. Each week the teens had a themed Wednesday with rockets, science lab, robots, steampunk style and virtual avatars, followed by an appropriate movie showing on Thursdays.

The teens watched “October Sky,” “The Incredible Hulk,” “Iron Man,” “Steamboy” and “Avatar.”

Teen Club member George Ward came in for the first time and built a rocket.

Ward enjoys the summer activities and said it’s much better than staying inside playing video games.

“Just having fun and coming to build stuff has been my favorite part,” the 13-year-old said.

The Adult SRC had a variety of programs to choose from this summer as well.

Upcycled craft day came before June’s Sci-Fi Book & Movie Club, featuring books movies like “Ender’s Game,” “Dune” and Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

This Friday a family science workshop, She Blinded Me with Science, taught kids and adults alike. They discovered scientific principles through playing with ooze and fluffy soap.

A grand prize drawing for those finishing the required reading on each club level went down Thursday.

Winners are eligible to win a Netbook Tablet or a Vtech Innotab 3 and were announced on Facebook and the library website www.tllsga.org.

Twin Lakes will redeem prizes until July 31.

“We’d especially like to thank all of the sponsors and donors that contributed to the 2014 Summer Reading Club. Your support of the SRC promotes a literate community, the love of reading, and a healthy public library system. We are beyond thankful for the incentive provided by local establishments,” Hamil said.

Hamil said Twin Lakes wants to offer new and innovate programs for library patrons.

“You always have to have a fresh perspective,” she said.

Friends of the library know they can count on solid offerings and more to come.
