Wax Galaxy Records now open in downtown Milledgeville

Wax Galaxy Records, located at 124 N. Wayne St., opened in February in downtown Milledgeville.

Marie Uhler of Eatonton and Mike Turner of North Florida came together during their time living in Athens. Uhler lived there as a touring musician who put on shows and local events. Turner previously managed the iconic local staple Wuxtry Records and put on Athens Popfest. Uhler worked on the 2016-2018 Athens Popfests.

Turner said that he always knew he wanted to have his own record store. He had worked in record stores since college. After years of saving and gathering record collections, he finally felt the time was right to take the leap and open Wax Galaxy Records in Milledgeville.

Turner brought the store to Milledgeville because of Georgia College & State University and because the city is part of Georgia’s Lake Country. There are no other media stores nearby, which forced locals to venture to Macon or Athens, so he said it made sense to open in Milledgeville and co-own with Uhler.

Uhler came up with the name Wax Galaxy.

“It wasn’t any special meaning or anything, it was just placing the right words together and looking for a name that hadn’t been used already record store-wise,” Turner said. “Wax is a slang term for a vinyl record, and Galaxy kinda implies we have a vast amount of records. Plus, all the sharp-point letters [in the logo design] all look good design-wise together.”

It also did not hurt that Turner and Uhler are both fans of science fiction and its various aesthetics.

Wax Galaxy Records is located at 124 N. Wayne St. The store had a soft opening Feb. 7, which yielded a positive response.

“We’ve gotten to meet a lot of great people and enthusiastic music fans,”  Uhler said.

The store is open on Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Wax Galaxy has more than 30,000 LPs, 7-inch records, CDs, cassettes, DVD/VHS, music books, turntables, speakers, posters and T-shirts. New items are added every week.

Wax Galaxy can also take items off customers’ hands.

“If you have a handful of items or a few boxes, you can bring them into the store anytime during business hours. If you have a large collection, you can contact us to set up an appointment where we can come to you,” Turner said.

The store offers trade-in credit or cash.

While every record store is bound to be unique based on inventory alone, Turner said Wax Galaxy Records has something that makes it stand out even more.

“The big thing for us, though, in opening a store was to have a store free of judgment when it comes to what people buy,” he said. “Lots of famous record stores have a hipster attitude vibe, and I really want customers to feel good about what they buy and to enjoy it. No music snobbery here.”

Turner said he enjoys getting to know customers and seeing how their record collections change and grow over time. It also means a lot that Milledgeville has embraced Wax Galaxy Records.

“For me, it’s been so nice having people come in and just be excited there is a place to buy music, movies, posters, etc,” he said. “We’ve only been open a few months, but there are some regulars and it’s really cool to see what they are into and be able to suggest new stuff for them to check out, and to see what they thought of stuff that they bought previously the next time they come in. Just seeing folks get excited to own their new favorite record or movie is pretty rewarding.”
