Now that most of central Georgia has thawed out from the recent snowstorm, this weekend is a great opportunity to shop local as we get back out and about.

While most of us think of shopping locally at Christmas, we should be more mindful to think local first all year long.

Many local businesses had to adjust their hours this week or close for a day or so altogether because of the storm. Factor in the hours of operation lost due to the storm earlier this month, and it certainly impacts retail sales. We can help by making local stores a priority not just in the coming days but throughout the year.

Although it is a great reminder, we shouldn’t need Small Business Saturday every November to remind us to support local businesses and retailers. The impact of Hurricane Helene last fall, coupled with the recent snow storms have impacted local businesses and the people who own them. These are people we know. They are part of the local community, often giving back in countless ways. Their businesses provide jobs and help propel to local economic engine.

Remember that every little bit counts, making it possible for local employees to remain on their jobs and generate sales tax dollars that are utilized in the local community.

When we shop local, it’s more likely that we’re dealing with a business owner who stands behind the products he or she sells and cares very much about pleasing customers in hopes that they return again and again throughout the year. Every sale made directly impacts their bottom line — both professionally and personally.
