GMC Prep softball celebrates its Elite Eight berth on Lake Oconee Academy’s field after sweeping the second-round playoff series in Greensboro Tuesday.

Make that one mission accomplished for the 2024 GMC Prep softball team.

The Lady Dogs are going back to Columbus for a third straight year after sweeping their way through the second round at Lake Oconee Academy Tuesday. GMC won the opener 5-0 then clinched with a 6-1 victory to knock the Region 8 champion Lady Titans from the playoff ranks. The run surrendered in Game 2 was the first the Lady Dogs have given up this postseason. Star senior pitcher Hannah Garner was once again on fire in the second round series, sitting down 28 LOA batters across the two games.

Now the Lady Dogs prepare for Columbus where the final eight teams standing in GHSA Class A Div. II will fight it out for the state championship. Four consecutive wins will net a title, or there’s the longer route through the losers’ bracket since the tournament is double elimination. Play begins Wednesday and lasts through Saturday for teams that go the distance.

The tournament field is now full. GMC will be joined by Clinch County, Schley County, Irwin County, Emanuel County Institute, Metter, Lanier County, and Screven County.

GMC head coach Jennifer Deason and her team will square off against Screven County, who defeated Crawford County to advance, to open the tournament.
