Two residential fires in the past four days have kept firefighters busy in Baldwin County.

Fortunately, no one was injured in either of them, local fire officials say.

A man and his dogs safely escaped a log cabin house fire while a woman and her sons safely escaped their double-wide mobile home that caught fire on Vinson Highway Saturday night.

The first fire caused considerable damage to a log cabin home on Old Plantation Trail about 8 p.m. Oct. 16, according to Baldwin County Fire Rescue Investigator Capt. Bradley Towe.

He said the log cabin fire started about 8 p.m. and sent several firefighters from three area fire departments, including Milledgeville Fire Rescue Services and Putnam County Fire Department to respond.

“The fire started from the fireplace at the roofline of the home,” Towe said. “Fire crews arrived to find heavy smoke and fire breaching through the peak of the roofline near the area of the fireplace.”

Towe said firefighters conducted an aggressive interior attack with multiple hand lines to battle the blaze.

“The fire took approximately 13 hours to fully extinguish due to lack of access to the fire area,” Towe said.

Towe said the cause of the log cabin residential fire was listed as accidental.

“It was caused by excessive heat from the fireplace piping in the attic space,” Towe said.

The second fire at the double-wide mobile home also resulted in extensive damage.

Towe said when firefighters arrived on the scene they discovered heavy flames coming out of the front door of the residence.

“Fire crews made an aggressive interior attack and brought the fire under control very quickly,” Towe said.

He said the fire originated around the stove.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the cause of that fire had not yet been determined.
