The Lady Dogs celebrated making it to the Sweet 16 following Wednesday’s series win at Seminole County. GMC Prep softball goes to Lake Oconee Academy for the next round Tuesday.

The GMC Prep softball team took care of business in its playoff-opening series at Seminole County Wednesday.

The Lady Dogs swept the Lady Indians from the postseason, winning Game 1 14-0 and Game 2 8-0 to move on to the second round at Lake Oconee Academy.

The first-round win was technically an upset since GMC entered as a No. 3 seed having to make the four-hour trip to southwest Georgia’s Seminole County, a No. 2. But the Lady Dogs have had no trouble taking care of business on the road in recent years, and obviously did so once again Wednesday.

They’ll need to keep that attitude up as they make the much shorter ride to Greensboro to face LOA Tuesday. The Lady Titans’ home series against Charlton County went the full three games after Charlton took the opener 8-3. With their backs against the wall, LOA won the next one 16-8 and the clincher 8-3 to keep the season alive.

Now the Lady Titans will host a familiar foe in GMC. The two teams have met twice this season already with the Lady Dogs having taken both contests, 8-0 and 8-4.

The third and fourth bouts will be Tuesday in Greensboro. First pitch for Game 1 is 4 p.m. with Game 2 to follow at 6. If there’s a 1-1 split, Game 3 is set for 4 p.m. Wednesday, also at LOA.

Series winner goes on to Columbus, site of the GHSA softball state championships. The eight-team, double-elimination tournament will take place over three days starting Oct. 30.

Lady Trojans bounced quickly

John Milledge saw its softball season end Thursday after two games at the GIAA Class AAA state tournament in Columbus.

Trailing 7-4 heading into the seventh inning in the opener, the Lady Trojans tried to rally but came up one run short against Terrell, losing 7-6. That pushed No. 5 JMA into the losers’ bracket where it was matched up against No. 8 Brookwood. The Lady Trojans had the lead early in that one, but gave it up as the game wore on to fall 18-12 and end the season.

John Milledge softball finished the year at 8-16 overall.
