Milledgeville’s Allied Arts’ “Thank You For Your Service” exhibit showcases artwork created by military veterans from the Georgia War Veterans Home.

Presented in collaboration with the Georgia War Veterans Home, the exhibit is on display through July 25.

Now in its second year, the exhibit aims to become a July staple at Allied Arts.

“We love this exhibit; it’s one of our favorites,” said Rebekah Tobar, executive director at Allied Arts.

That sentiment is reflected at the veterans home as well.

“It means a lot to the residents,” said Michelle Flood, activity coordinator at Georgia War Veterans Home. “It is one of their favorite activities we do here.”

Tobar and Kristin Allen, program coordinator at Allied Arts, worked with Flood to set up the event.

“It’s an opportunity for the veterans to come out and show their creativity and to have a night that’s focused on them, thanking them for their service and celebrating their creative side,” said Allen. “It’s 100% about the veterans.”

Last year, 15 veterans participated, showcasing their artwork and engaging with the community. The veterans who participate are involved in the whole process of creating their artwork, including framing. Next year’s exhibit will feature frames that the veterans make themselves.

This year’s exhibit features a new addition from the Lake Oconee Quilt Guild. The guild has loaned Allied Arts three Quilts of Valor that are also on display. Quilts of Valor are crafted to honor and comfort military veterans, and their inclusion in the exhibit adds an extra layer of tribute and respect.

Several veterans attended Wednesday’s opening reception. In addition to viewing the artwork, attendees at the reception engaged in conversations with the veterans, learning more about their experiences and the stories behind their creations.

Flood said this event is unique because the veterans are able to not only do something for the community, but have the spotlight on them and their work.

“It is a wonderful time for us to honor the veterans and give the community the opportunity to honor them,” said Tobar. “It’s fun to spend that time during the reception with them and get to know them, for them to talk about their life and their artwork.”

The exhibit provides a platform for veterans to display their artistic talents and serves as a way for the community to show appreciation for their service.

“It is great that appreciation is shown to veterans for their service,” said Flood. “This event allows appreciation for what they are doing in the later stages of their lives.”
