We have lost the true meaning of “patriot.”
A patriot is typically defined as someone who loves, supports and defends their country and its interests. Patriots demonstrate their allegiance by upholding the values, principles and laws our nation. They engage in activities such as community service, military service, or participation in the democratic process through voting and peaceful protest.

A patriot is committed to the well-being and prosperity of their country, striving to contribute positively to its growth and development. They may express dissent or critique policies or actions they believe are harmful to the nation, all while remaining dedicated to the ideals on which their country was founded.
In contrast, the individuals who participated in the January 6 Capitol riot, often referred to as insurrectionists, engaged in unlawful and violent behavior that directly contradicted the principles of patriotism. They stormed the U.S. Capitol with the intent to disrupt the certification of the presidential election results, a constitutional democratic process.
The actions of the J6 rioters were fueled by misinformation and conspiracy theories, and their behavior resulted in destruction, chaos and loss of life. Rather than upholding the rule of law and democratic principles, they sought to undermine the very foundations of American democracy.
While both patriots and rioters may feel passionate about their beliefs and their country, their actions and motivations differ significantly. Patriots work within the framework of the law to effect positive change, while the rioters sought to subvert those values through violence and insurrection.
