For the first time since fall 2019, local book lovers were feted with a chance to peruse hundreds of titles at the Friends of the Library book sale. With changes to library staff and the move to the Middle Georgia Regional Library System, coupled with shifts due to the COVID-19 pandemic, last weekend’s return of the book sale was a welcomed sign. Putting together a sale of this level, with so many donations, is a tremendous undertaking. The Friends of the Mary Vinson Memorial Library volunteers who worked so hard to put this event together deserve a big thanks from the community. This event is the local library’s biggest fundraiser, with proceeds going to support library efforts such as the summer reading program and other activities that benefit the whole community. The sale is also a great community event, bringing together book lovers of all ages in support of the local library. For those who missed Saturday’s book sale, there are still opportunities to support the library. The cost for becoming a Friend is only $10 annually for students with their student ID, $15 for seniors and $20 for individuals.

When the pandemic hit and schools went to remote learning, the library supported many local students with WiFi access and resources and materials they needed. Amid the pandemic, the library shifted, allowing many residents who were on lockdown at home to check out materials through curbside pickup.
Public libraries were a bright spot among a sea of lockdowns and closings, providing internet hot spots for students doing virtual schoolwork, giving relief to parents working from home with young children through virtual storytimes, and offering audiobooks and e-books as a respite for those of us who simply needed something positive to help get us through the upheaval around us.
Supporting the library supports the community. Thank you to all who had a hand in bringing this important event back to life.
