Editorial

By the time many of us read this editorial in today’s edition, the presents will have all been opened and little remains under the tree.

For most of us in this year of COVID-19, 2020 has brought forth numerous challenges, particularly in the form of financial hardships, which struck a somber note for Christmas gift-giving. Through their best efforts, many local moms and dads were simply unable to provide material goods this year because the more immediate needs of food and clothing are too great. But in the midst of these financial challenges, many among us have found greater joy in extending ourselves to others this Christmas, and this special act and the outpouring of assistance if far greater than any present that can be found under any tree.

This gift is seen through the local volunteers, businesses and private contributors who reached out to others and the numerous local business owners who have done the same. It is seen through all who gave to the annual Toys for Tots drive and other toy giveaways that made it possible for toys to be distributed to a thousand local children this year despite the record demand. It is seen though the Helping Hand program, the Empty Stocking Fund and Cafe Centra. It is seen through every canned food drive, coat drive, fundraiser and gift donation.

Yet, ironically, the greatest recipients are those of us who give and not those on the receiving end.

Oftentimes, when we think of financial difficulties and life’s hardships, we overlook the impact they can have on children. This year, through the efforts of so many locals, hundreds of children woke up to a special Christmas that otherwise, if not for their efforts, would not have been possible. Through their eyes, and through the kindness from the hearts of those who gave and made these special moments possible, the spirit of Christmas is still alive.

That special sentiment, despite what was or wasn’t under the tree this morning, is one certainly worthy of us all keeping gin mind — for the remainder of this year, the coming year and beyond.
