Grooving to the beats of GC jazz

MILLEDGEVILLE — Funk, rock, Latin and swing will shimmy throughout Russell Auditorium during Georgia College Jazz Band’s annual spring concert.

Titled “Variations of Jazz Styles,” the Thursday, March 7, and Friday, March 8, events start at 7:30 p.m.

“These performances will cover various forms of jazz to showcase our talented students’ range,” said Dr. Clifford Towner, director of band activities in the Department of Music. “The events also prepare the Jazz Band for its upcoming performance in April for Pensacola JazzFest 2013.”

During the Georgia College performance, the band will premiere the jazz/rock piece “Rush (Alternative)” by senior music major Cory Robinson.

“Cory gave me the piece for input, and I really liked it,” Towner said. “It’s a challenging piece of music. For the band to perform it is an opportunity to feature one of the department’s own from a compositional standpoint.”

The group also will perform popular jazz tune “Take Five” written by Paul Desmond and performed by The Dave Brubeck Quartet.

Student vocalists Julie Overvold and Calia Howse will perform solos for “As Time Goes By,” which was made famous in the 1942 movie “Casablanca,” and British romantic song “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square,” respectively.

“The concert will entertain and take audiences members through different times of jazz,” said Towner. “The band always steps up to the difficulty of the music and delivers an amazing show.”

General admission is $5 and Georgia College students are free. Admission to the show helps offset tour expenses.
