MILLEDGEVILLE — As a way to commemorate Black History Month, Georgia College’s Sallie Ellis Davis House is displaying works and artifacts relaying the story of the African-American community during the Reconstruction era throughout February.
A traveling exhibition in partnership with The Tubman Museum in Macon, ‘Showing the Way: National Black Leaders from Macon, 1824-1933’ is featured at the Sallie Ellis Davis House starting at 6 p.m. Friday.
‘The exhibit is about prominent African-Americans in Macon like senators and representatives for the state and at the national level,’ said Deitrah Taylor, program assistant of the Sallie Ellis Davis House. ‘We want to continue the story from the Antebellum period structures and talk about what happened after the Civil War. This exhibit is one way to highlight that.’
Thursday afternoon, Taylor, Old Governor’s Mansion Curator Matt Davis and mansion staff Femke Ballard and Cameron Kline setup the exhibit, which will continue throughout the month.
The event is free to Georgia College community while general admission is $3.21 for adults and $2.14 for other students.
The house opens for regular hours Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and by appointment.
