MILLEDGEVILLE — Georgia College’s Sallie Ellis Davis House will host cultural events during February to celebrate Black History Month.
The cultural arts center will provide exhibitions and workshops to observe African-American achievements in the United States.
“We are celebrating Black History Month with exhibits and cultural events that tell the story of the African-American community in Reconstruction and beyond,” said Deitrah Taylor, program assistant of the Sallie Ellis Davis House.
Sponsored by the university’s Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity, the first event will take place at the center Friday, Feb. 1.
“Showing the Way: National Black Leaders from Macon, 1824-1933,” is a traveling exhibition in partnership with The Tubman Museum in Macon. The reception and exhibition begins at 6 p.m. The exhibit continues through March 1. General admission is $3.21 for adults and $2.14 for non-GC students. The event is free to the campus community.
Located on South Clarke Street, the historic home now is a modern-day cultural center, including classroom accommodations, a meeting and banquet room, the latest technology and a small kitchen.
The house opens for regular tours Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. by appointment.
