MILLEDGEVILLE — The Milledgeville City Council conducted a first reading of the FY 2011 budget adoption ordinance Tuesday.

Council members received copies of the proposed budget for their consumption ahead of formal adoption. The meeting also served as a public hearing on the matter. Only one member of the public was present, but did not offer opinion during the period open for public input.

This year’s tentative budget, if approved, reflects significant cuts across the board.

“Everybody was cut,” interim city manager Barry Jarrett said, “some more than others. Overall, it was about a 10 percent cut.”

The current proposed budget comes in at just under $18.1 million, compared to last year’s budget of $20.7 million. Jarrett said that $10,677,094 are budgeted for the general fund and $7,384,382 are budgeted for the city water department.

The proposed budget also includes funding for local adult literacy programs. The city has allocated $6,300 for the initiative in the FY 2011 budget. Last year, the program received $5,000 budgeted dollars plus $2,000 added as a line item by then-city manager Scott Wood.

The city will conduct the final reading of the budget at their next meeting June 22, and the council is expected to vote on the budget. The fiscal year runs from July 1, 2010, through June 30, 2011.

In other business the council:

— unanimously adopted a resolution authorizing two contracts with the Georgia Department of Corrections for prison work details;

— unanimously authorized an agreement with the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police to provide assessments for candidates for supervisory and management positions within the Milledgeville Police Department; and

— unanimously authorized a one-day special events alcohol license application for the Old Capital Museum for a July 24 event at the Brown-Stetson-Sanford House.

The Milledgeville City Council meets at 7:30 p.m. the first and third Tuesdays of the month at Milledgeville City Hall, located at 119 E. Hancock St.
