Fairbrass receives appointment to USMA at West Point

MILLEDGEVILLE — Georgia Military College Prep School senior Elliot Fairbrass has received an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point.

The official word came from Congressman John Barrow who called Fairbrass with the good news Feb. 22.

Fairbrass said he visited West Point with his uncle over the summer and experienced a feeling of calling while there.

“So many of my family attended West Point (five including my grandfather) and with that tradition and the atmosphere of the campus, there was a very powerful sense of home for me just being on campus,” he said.

The grandfather Fairbrass refers to is Maj. Gen. Peter J. Boylan, U.S. Army (Retired), President of Georgia Military College.

Although he says he has always wanted a military career, engineering is also something that captivates him. His interest in this field became more apparent during his experience with Odyssey of the Mind, an international program incorporating engineering and theater to teach creative problem solving.

He stated, “I discovered a knack for engineering as I built vehicles, stage sets, and machines. During my six years with the program, my team made it to world-level competition four times, placing second in the world in 2012. I feel that attending West Point will give me the best education and preparation for success in this field.”

Fairbrass has a cumulative 4.0 GPA and is ranked fourth in his class. He is the high school JROTC Battalion executive officer. He represented GMC’s JROTC program at Junior Cadet Leadership Camp where he was promoted to battalion commander of the camp, the highest cadet leadership position. Some of his other activities and honors include vice president of the School Government Association, president of Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, Student Advisory Council, Senior Beta Club, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Wofford Scholar, Presbyterian College Academic Achievement Award, Distinguished Order of the Servant Leader Award (100+ hours of community service), Georgia Boys State, Youth Leadership Baldwin and Sacred Heart Catholic Church Youth Group. He also lettered in varsity football and varsity soccer.

Fairbrass is the son of Mark and Emily Fairbrass, and the grandson of Maj. Gen. Peter and Kathy Boylan. His brother, Liam, is a sophomore at GMC Prep.
