Rains, hail hit Baldwin and area

Fewer than 30,000 remain without power statewide as local assess damage

MILLEDGEVILLE — More than 9,300 Baldwin County customers were temporarily without power as strong winds, rain and hail swept through the Central Georgia area, according to a Georgia Power spokesperson Monday night.

Thousands of Georgians across the state remain without power as of Tuesday morning.

Reports of trees down and cleanup remained the buzz on social media early Tuesday morning as local residents arose to assess the damage and return to work and school.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, scattered and severe thunderstorms swept through Central Georgia with numerous reports of trees down and baseball-sized hail. Property damage was also reported in some areas. The line of storms was expected to continue in some areas until around 3 a.m.

According to Associated Press reports, officials said trees and power lines were down throughout areas of northwest Georgia as well. Georgia Power officials said 73,000 customers statewide were without power Monday night, and of that number, 31,000 were in northwest Georgia. Crews worked through the night to trim that number to fewer than 30,000 by early Tuesday morning.

The National Weather Service reported a store was destroyed and 12 homes were damaged between Cave Spring and Silver Creek, south of Rome in Floyd County.

The Georgia Power official said at press time Monday that 70 separate events and incidences of outages were reported in the Baldwin County region.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for the Central Georgia region until around 9:30 p.m. The power outages did not appear to affect all of Baldwin County, however, there were some reports of outages in Jones, Wilkinson and other surrounding counties as well.

Meteorologists issued tornado warnings for parts of north Georgia — including metro Atlanta — and severe thunderstorm warnings for other areas Monday afternoon. Most warnings in the metro Atlanta area expired around 7 p.m.

Today’s forecast for Baldwin County calls for more showers and possible thunderstorms, mainly before 7 a.m. The remainder of the day is expected to be sunny with highs near 70 and northwest winds 10 to 15 miles per hour. Lows for tonight are expected to be around 38 degrees with calm winds.
