Original furniture returns to mansion

MILLEDGEVILLE — Two original pieces of the Old Governor’s Mansion at Georgia College have returned home this year.

The dining room table belonging to late Georgia Gov. Howell Cobb and secretary of Georgia’s Civil War Gov. Joseph Brown add historical depth to the mansion’s rich collection.

“These pieces are now on display as permanent parts of our interpretive collection,” said Jim Turner, mansion director. “Since earning museum accreditation from the American Association of Museums last year, descendants of the mansion’s eight governors have been donating more family treasures to us to share with the public.”

Cobb’s 14-foot-long walnut and mahogany table seats up to 14 people and was used during family dining occasions, said Turner.

“Dating circa 1840s, the table was probably used for main meals of the day, including supper and certainly Sunday dinner,” Turner said. “Visitors can view the table in the family dining room on the mansion’s main floor.”

The secretary resides in the clerk and messenger’s bedroom on the mansion’s third floor.

Storing pens, novels and state legislative journals, Brown’s 10-foot-high walnut secretary dates circa 1850s.

Outfitted with compartments and drawers, the lock-and-key desk also is where Brown wrote personal letters, Turner added.

“Each piece helps the mansion staff tell the stories of our governors in more detail,” said Turner. “We’re glad the items are back with us.”
