MILLEDGEVILLE — The new Baldwin County Airport Advisory Committee recently held its inaugural meeting at the Baldwin County Airport. Approved by the Baldwin County Commissioners in December, the committee provides support and guidance for the commissioners and county staff on all aspects of the airport.
Jim Wolfgang, the chair, said, ‘The airport is a critical component of the community. Beyond the recreational and tourism aspect, it is essential to the health and well being of our community. Medical flights, law enforcement, Federal Emergency Management Agency support and the delivery of supplies and needed equipment through general aviation airports have been documented recently during many disasters such as Hurricane Sandy. Furthermore, it is a key factor in economic development.’
Chat Daniel, vice chair and also member of the Milledgeville-Baldwin County Development Authority Board added, ‘Most of those looking to invest in the community don't drive down 441. They come in on the 5,000 feet of asphalt at the airport.’
The committee realizes that in today's time of FAA regulations, TSA security and financial challenges, they need to work to improve the facility and involve the pilot and public communities in supporting this valuable resource. A first step will be a planned workshop for pilots and other community and business representatives to establish activities and working groups.
