Grand illusion show to support Baldwin GIVEs

MILLEDGEVILLE — Nearly 40 Baldwin High School students have logged more than 2,500 volunteer hours to aid local organizations through Baldwin GIVEs. In order to showcase the selfless service of local teens and provide financial support to the running of the program, Mark “The Magic Man” Hulett will demonstrate some of his grandest illusions during his new upcoming show called “Deja Vu” to fade the line between dream and reality.

“This year’s show is based on dreams. A lot of people have different types of dreams, like dreams of flying, floating, falling and some dreams are nightmares. Some people even dream about cars and money, and I’ll cover that too in the show. Every effect will be based on a dream,” Hulett said. “This is a big show; there will be no balloon animals and no card tricks. The main thing I want to do is highlight all of these kids and what they do volunteer-wise. They’ve logged in over 2,000 hours and it just goes unseen.”

Slated for 7 p.m. Saturday, March 16 in the Baldwin Fine Arts Center, the show is sponsored by Z97 FM and Childre Nissan. Combining Hulett’s comedy, unique ability to tell heartwarming stories, and magical appeal with grand illusions, the 90-minute show will consist of multiple grand illusions, assistants, costume changes, lighting effects and audience participation.

“This is something new that no one has ever seen me do before. I know that some people came out last year when we did ‘Solitaire,’ but this year’s show is bigger and better,” he said. “I will make a car appear, and try to escape while underwater for three-minutes. I hope people come out and support Baldwin GIVEs. The community only gets to see me do a big show like this once a year, and a lot of folks last year wished they knew how good it was going to be.”

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for youth under age 12, and $25 for VIP tickets, which include premium seating, backstage meet and greet, and a take home trick. Tickets can be purchased at the Elite School of Gymnastics, Glow Salon, the Baldwin College & Career Academy, Z97 FM, or from a Baldwin GIVEs volunteer.

As the second satellite center of Georgia College GIVE (Georgia College Involved in Volunteer Efforts), Baldwin GIVEs provides high school students with various volunteer opportunities at school organizations and community nonprofits.

“With the financial support, we hope to take the burden off of organizations and even the student when doing community service. We want to be able to supply students with the equipment or supplies they need when they provide service. Just like the President’s Volunteer Service Award, we plan to have a local award ceremony at the high school this spring, and the funds will help cover that cost as well,” said Wilhemenia Wade, supervisor of Baldwin GIVEs. “Overall, it’s not just about the money, but it’s also the exposure. We want to recognize students for their support of organizations. We thank [Hulett] for supporting us in helping us to be successful.”

A native of Hazlehurst, Hulett was always his class clown and his enchantment with performing magic began in college when a friend showed him a few tricks. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice administration from Georgia College, he began perfecting acts and creating his own illusions. He has since used his unique skills in entertaining with magic all across the southeast for more than 20 years. Hulett performs at colleges, universities, conventions, fairs, restaurants, malls, trade shows, beauty pageants, schools, fundraisers and corporate events.

“My wish is that everyone who leaves the show is worn out from the emotional roller coaster ride,” Hulett said of the upcoming illusion show. “We wanted to find something that no one had seen before, something that would leave the audience spellbound. Maybe this is it? We’ll have to wait and see.”
