First Friday to celebrate second anniversary

MILLEDGEVILLE — First Friday’s second year anniversary is quickly approaching. Just a little over two years ago the First Friday Committee decided the focus of First Fridays would be to celebrate the diversity of art in Milledgeville: painting, drawing, ceramics, music, theatre, photography, literature, culinary and so much more. The event has given local citizens one more reason to be proud of this great community as well as bring excitement and economic growth to downtown Milledgeville.

The theme for the very first Milledgeville First Friday was HeArts in the Ville. The theme played off Valentine’s Day and local art work was displayed in downtown businesses. Due to heavy rain during the first, First Friday event, all outdoor activities were cancelled and participation was slim. A bad weather beginning didn’t deter the First Friday Committee. They pushed through and managed to create a successful event each month thereafter.

Two short years later First Friday has come a long way with the guidance of Director Carlee Schulte and the First Friday Committee. With 22 events under their belt, First Friday has grown into an event that the local citizens have become proud of. Every First Friday the sidewalks are filled with excited children, adults and merchants.

Many strong partnerships have also been formed to make each month different than the last. Main Street is so thankful for the following partners that have helped guide, plan and execute First Fridays: the devoted, tireless volunteers on the committee, the City of Milledgeville Public Works, fire and police departments, Z97 FM, Digital Bridges, Oconee Regional Medical Center Volunteer Services Department, downtown merchants, Convention & Visitors Bureau, local artists and musicians, Georgia’s Old Capital Museum, Allied Arts, The 48th Brigade, The Matter Man, The Old Governor’s Mansion, Georgia College, Creative Expressions, Beckhams Used Cars, Southside Equipment, Duckworth Farm Supply, Fowler Flemister, Standard Sand USA, and many other supporters!

The First Friday Committee continues to increase the growth of each First Friday along with their partnerships. The group is thrilled with the progress First Fridays has made in just two years and are looking forward to many more successful years to come.

Come ‘Fall in Love with the 80s’, February 1st.
