Area businesses get recognized for school support

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Milledgeville-Baldwin County Chamber of Commerce’s Partners In Education committee is offering the local business community a chance to receive recognition for their efforts within public and private schools.

The Chamber celebrated the kick off of an initiative highlighting businesses at schools with a ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday at the Early Learning Center (ELC). A white, 5 by 6 foot sign currently displaying names of 20 active partners is located near the front entrance of the school to show passersby of their vested support of the school.

“The sign is a symbol that gives some public awareness that those individuals on that sign have contributed to the school by volunteering their time, financial support, or program support,” said Lyn Chandler, chair of the Partners In Education committee, a subcommittee under the Workforce Development committee. “The sign is permanent, but names can be moved around as businesses continually become involved. We hope that many other businesses will get involved in this program.”

The ELC sign partners include Applebee’s, Allgood Pest Control, Baldwin County Department of Family and Children Services, Beckham’s Used Cars, Captain D’s, Chili’s Bar & Grill, Communities In Schools, First United Methodist Church, Georgia Power, Heritage Printing, Kiwanis Club of Milledgeville, Longhorn Steakhouse, Lowe’s, Lyn Chandler, River Edge Behavioral Health Center, State Farm Insurance, The Bellamy Student Apartments, Three Rivers Home Health Care, Walmart and Z-97 Radio with room to add more.

Heritage Printing, Inc and Lowe’s donated the ELC sign and will continue being in charge of creating future signs.

“Children are our future. This is just a small way we could help,” said Walter Prestwood, owner of Heritage Printing. “I encourage others to get involved.”

In order to become a supporting partner of a school, businesses must be a Chamber member and agree to play an active role within a school.

The next sign is slated to be installed at Creekside Elementary School this week, which already has 16 supporting partners. Participating schools include Georgia Military College, John Milledge Academy, E.B.L.A. Academy, Sinclair Christian Academy and schools within the Baldwin County school system.

For more information about becoming a sign partner, to get involved with the Partners In Education committee, or to volunteer at a school, call Chandler at (478) 454-8090 or Carol Goings, chair of the Workforce Development committee, at (478) 457-3325.
