Lips are puckered for annual Kiss A Pig fundraiser

MILLEDGEVILLE — Potential pig-smoochers have been named and are ready to raise money for the local Boys and Girls Club’s Kiss a Pig fundraiser.

The annual contest generates funds for the local Boys & Girls Club’s afterschool programs by petitioning volunteers to raise more money than their fellow participants — all in hopes of carrying the honor of kissing a pig. All of the funds go directly to aiding the afterschool organization.

The Kiss a Pig competition kicked off on Valentine’s Day and will run until March 26.

Paul Bernard, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club, looks forward to another successful fundraiser.

“This is one of our fundraisers that has a wide range of profit. One year we managed to raise $13,000,” Bernard said. “But typically we usually bring in between $3,000 and $5,000.”

The winner will be determined by the amount of money raised.

“Whoever has the most ‘bacon’ at the end, wins,” he said. “We will be counting the ‘bacon’ on March 26 and thereafter schedule a day for the winner and the pig to make the kiss official.”

The Boys & Girls Club is a youth organization for kids that meets year round. The organization boasts about 250 children within the program. On a daily basis, the Baldwin facility supports 80 to 100 children and 30 to 40 youth in Jones County.

Four competitors from all over the Baldwin County area are taking part in this year’s contest. This year’s contestants include Mike Waers, lead pastor at Northridge Christian Church, Ashley Marcott from Milledgeville-Baldwin County Chamber of Commerce, Alicia Meadows of Georgia Power and Milledgeville orthodontist Dr. Noell Craig.

Participants raise the money themselves, and the donations symbolize votes on a graduated scale. To help one of the lucky contestants in their quest to plant a big smoocher on a pig, readers should contact the contestant of choice and make a generous donation.

To see the contestants smooch Miss Piggy, directly contribute to their Kiss a Pig funds at their place of business.
