Milledgeville Baldwin County Habitat for Humanity gets helping hand

MILLEDGEVILLE — Baldwin High School athletes spent Saturday, Feb. 9, cleaning the Habitat for Humanity ReStore of Milledgeville and Baldwin County.

Volunteers temporarily traded in soccer balls and pom-poms for brooms and dustpans to help the MBCHFH ReStore prepare a space, which will be used for storage and construction during their next house build. BHS faculty and staff were also in attendance.

Soccer coach Clayton McClendon and BHS Health Occupations instructor Wilhelmenia Wade worked alongside their athletes on Saturday.

“The athletes from Saturday really enjoyed helping out,” McClendon said. “They were able to see how working together and helping can make a difference. The experience helped players to be able to count on each other and build teamwork and communication up. It was an experience that was very positive.”

Wade said the partnership between BHS and MBCHFH was made possible through the Baldwin GIVES program, which is an affiliate of the Georgia College Give Center.

“Our partnership is wonderful and has greatly enhanced our push toward community service,” Wade said. “The sports teams have been eager to participate in the efforts.”

While the athletes were busy at the ReStore, several more volunteers were rolling up their sleeves to clear the lot for the next Habitat house build at Leo Court.

“I had a wonderful time Saturday. My friends and I enjoyed doing something hands-on to help the community,” Georgia College student Melanie Hutcheson said. “We were so excited to meet some of the people that have received Habitat homes in the past. It made our work all the more rewarding.”
