Eggs & Issues series to focus on Baldwin County’s health status

MILLEDGEVILLE — The community is invited to hear and discuss the local obesity epidemic and the progress of the Live Healthy Baldwin coalition during the Eggs & Issues Breakfast Series hosted by the Milledgeville-Baldwin County Chamber of Commerce next week.

Georgia College’s Center for Health and Social Issues Director Dr. Jim Lidstone will lead the discussion with local city and county officials, health advocates, educators, citizens and others in attendance.

“I will give an update on the state of obesity in Baldwin County and current statistics on obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. I will then show video clips from ‘The Weight of the Nation’ documentary series,” Lidstone said. “I’ll talk about Live Healthy Baldwin goals for the fourth year of the project, and what a healthy community looks like and give some examples of some of CNN Money’s top 10 small cities to live in across the nation.”

Registration for the “The Weight of Milledgeville-Baldwin County” is slated to begin at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, at The Original Crockett’s Family Cafeteria. The series is presented by Central Georgia Technical College (CGTC) and is sponsored by BodyPlex Fitness and Georgia Power Company. Tickets are $10 each, or $75 for a table of eight. The cost of tickets includes a breakfast buffet prior to the 8 a.m. presentation.

“I hope [those in attendance] will see the difference between Milledgeville and some of the other communities in the top 10. It’s not that great of a gap; and we can close that gap and we can be like those communities with policy and infrastructure changes,” Lidstone said. “A lot of good things are going for us, but we’re just a few steps away from actually being there.”

At the monthly Eggs & Issues Breakfast, business and community leaders, and elected officials take the opportunity to have an open forum discussing issues relating to Milledgeville and Baldwin County. Topics include legislative agenda, education, transportation and economic development.

The initial series held in October featured school Superintendent Geneva Braziel, who delivered an update on the school system’s successes and challenges. At the second breakfast in November, Oconee Regional Medical Center CEO Jean Aycock provided an update on the state of community health care and local Development Authority Executive Director Matt Poyner highlighted the status of industrial development during last month’s breakfast series.

The Eggs & Issues program will continue every four to six weeks until May, where at the last program in the series state and federal legislators will be featured at CGTC’s new facility.
