MILLEDGEVILLE — Georgia’s Old Capital Museum Society will mark the state’s 280th birthday Saturday with a trip back to the days of its founding.
The Old Capital Museum’s Georgia Day activities will include half price admission to its 10 galleries as well as refreshments and registration for door prizes.
This is the museum’s seventh annual Georgia Day observance.
“Last year we welcomed over 200 visitors of all ages to the museum for this celebration,” said Dr. Amy Wright, Executive Director of the museum, “and we anticipate another big turn-out this year.”
The museum, located on 201 E. Green St., is nestled on the ground floor of the old statehouse on the campus of Georgia Military College.
Re-enactors will take museum patrons back in time to the days of Georgia’s settlement. The first Georgia colonists led by General James Oglethorpe landed at Yamacraw Bluff in February 1733.
Gen. Oglethorpe, portrayed by local resident David Wells, will present accounts of the hardships and trials the early settlers faced. This year, Wells will be joined by Mrs. Jared Irvin, portrayed by Sarah Brantley, wife of the first of the governors to resident in Milledgeville, Thomas R.R. Cobb, portrayed by Scot Stancill, and Mrs. Tomlinson Fort, portrayed by Wright.
Re-enactor Wells has been a lover of history for years. After he retired from the Air Force, he came to Milledgeville and began teaching Georgia history.
Museum visitors are also encouraged to stop by the museum’s newest exhibit, “From Broom to Musket: Women of the South, 1861-1865.”
The museum will open from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
