BHS opens students cosmetology services to public

MILLEDGEVILLE — Baldwin High School students involved in cosmetology courses are enhancing their skills even further as they finally welcome the public into their real-life-like salon to provide student cosmetology services starting Tuesday.

“When we open up to the community, it will help us prepare for the real world by learning how to style properly on real customers. We can get good practice and maybe even be interested in opening up our own shop,” said senior Khadijah James while practicing hair-coloring techniques on a mannequin Friday. “People should come in and give us an opportunity to show our creative styles.”

Located in the Baldwin College & Career Academy at the high school, the cosmetology classroom and lab is equipped with new sinks, dryer chairs and stations with mirrors, styling chairs, styling tools and products. The entire salon is operated and serviced by the students, from scheduling appointments and styling to ensuring all clients have a great experience.

“When clients call, the receptionist will greet them and ask them what they would like to have done. They can also request a particular student for a service, or we can fit them with someone who is just as knowledgeable,” said Latonia Walker, cosmetology and SkillsUSA teacher. “The work is going to be done by the students, but I’m here to assist and help the students in the learning environment.”

Hair services include $2 shampoo with conditioner, $5 hair scalp treatments, $15 relaxer, $5 hair cuts, and $5 to $15 hair styling services, including basic wrap, braiding, blow dry, up do’s, flat irons, hot curls and roller set. Nail care services, including manicures, pedicures, nail design, polish and paraffin wax dip range from $2 to $8 while waxing of the eyebrows, arms and legs start at $4 and a $15 basic facial cleansing. Nursing students will offer their massage services of the hands, arms and legs also.

“I have five boys barbering, so we offer clients barber services as well. We don’t have the space right now for facials, but hopefully we can offer it in the future,” Walker said. “The money we raise will go toward the purchase of supplies for the program in order for us to continue to use the most current and up-to-date products.”

While students earn a grade by learning and mastering various services listed on their task sheet, which follows state board guidelines, students will have the opportunity to take the state board exam in April to earn their cosmetology license before high school graduation.

“I’m studying to get my cosmetology license here and then after graduation I want to go to the army. By getting the license, it will save a lot of time and I don’t have to worry about it afterward; I will have something to fall back on while I wait to go to the army and I can go ahead and work in a salon,” said senior Daisha Morris, who enjoys working with hair. “I think the cosmetology course here is good for the underclassmen because they get to experience Salon Services I, Salon Services II and the advanced class all in this room.”

The Baldwin College & Career Academy services high school students in grades nine through 12, featuring career pathways in education, culinary arts, agriculture science, health care science, government and public safety, family and consumer sciences, business and computer science, marketing, sales and services, and architecture, construction, communications and transportation.

The Career Academies Project is spearheaded by Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and is a collaboration between the Technical College System of Georgia and the Georgia Department of Education.

Student hair and spa services are available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and by appointment only from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

“Students will get experience working with real people because they currently use mannequins. The experience will be more realistic where they learn staying on schedule and completing a service in a certain amount of time, being true and honest to clients, communicating and bonding with clients, building their soft skills, and being professional at all times,” Walker said. “This is going to help them adjust to the real workforce.”
