Stories from Memory Hill

Cemetery ramble at iconic Memory Hill

MILLEDGEVILLE — Milledgeville boasts an extraordinary history including 61 years as the state capital in the early to mid-1800s. A local cemetery provides a final resting place for citizens, while standing as a museum and park.

A Ramble at Memory Hill Cemetery will offer explanations of the physical symbols and fascinating people forever a part of the unique space. Notables like Flannery O'Connor attract visitors from all around the world.

During the scheduled cemetery walks, chairperson of the Friends of Baldwin County Cemeteries (FBCC), Sue Harrington, will lead the way describing the deeper meaning of gravestones and classic fences to name a few. Memory Hill gives insight into the deceased's views on religion and art.

The Ramble will uncover gentle symbolism of religion and feelings about death within the Victorian cemetery.

The FBCC has spent nearly 12 years preserving and beautifying the cemetery. All event proceeds go to the group.

Individuals and state boards help fund Memory Hill's maintenance. Fence, painting and brickwork touch ups are vital upkeep.

Two Rambles are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13 and Sunday, Oct. 14. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children.

Wear comfortable shoes and be able to walk on uneven ground. The event moves to the following weekend in the event of rain.
