JMA C-team downs Gatewood, still perfect

The passing game led the John Milledge Academy football C-team to a 20-14 over Gatewood, head coach Don Marchman said. It also improved the JMA squad to 4-0 on the year.

The Trojans went 9-for-11 through the air, including two touchdowns and an interception. Marchman used three players as a passer, including starting quarterback Jordan Demmon, backup quarterback Brantley Attaway and running back/wide receiver Damian Bacon.

“The passing game was the difference,” Marchman said. “When you go 9-for-11 for more than 100 yards and two touchdowns with three different guys, it’s going to be the difference.”

Bacon was the obvious standout on the field. He went 1-for-1 passing, caught three passes, scored two touchdowns and recovered a fumble.

“Damian had a huge game,” Marchman said.

Demmon had six completions, threw two touchdown passes and caught three passes from Attaway, who went 3-for-3 as a passer.

Sammy Roberts also caught a pass, and John Thrower scored on two 2-point conversion plays. He also caught two passes.

“We just had a good day throwing the ball,” Marchman said. “Our offense got the job done.”

Gatewood went up 8-0 early in the contest, but the Trojans pulled to within two at the half. JMA scored on their first possession of the third quarter, and that’s when they began to pull away for the six-point victory.

The Gators threatened to score with time running out in the fourth quarter, but the Trojan defense stepped up with a big stop at the 1 yard line to preserve the win.

On defense, Brandon Bush led the way, stopping the Gators from running anything inside. Bacon also was a force in the Trojans’ defensive backfield.

The JMA football C-team returns to action Thursday, hitting the road to take on Piedmont. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
