Ole-Timers tourney a success

The weather was windy and cool, but that did not stop 50 two-man teams from participating in the second annual Ole-Timers Reunion Bass Tournament hosted by Little River Park on Oct. 7.

The participating anglers were competing against each other for monetary awards and trophies, but renewing old friendships and passing on a wide range of fish stories took top honors at the tournament.

The Ole-Timers Reunion Bass Tournament was the idea of Larry Kitchens, who now works at Little River Park and who has been involved in competitive angling for many years. Kitchens wanted to bring together anglers who competed in fishing tournaments on Lake Sinclair before what we now know as the modern age of tournament bass fishing. Many of those anglers have fished competitively on Lake Sinclair for more than 30 years and a few for more than 40 years.

Many of the anglers have retired long ago from competitive bass fishing and many were involved with local bass clubs that participated in some of the initial competitive tournaments held on Lake Sinclair. Comer Gheesling, former owner and operator of Little River Park returned for the second year in a row to act as weigh master.

  • This angler knows how to catch crappie at night A few years ago, I went to a gospel singing and the man singing the real-real-real low bass part in the group that night was a fellow named Jesse Wall. Now Jesse has some real connections to the gospel music industry. J. D. Sumner, who performed with Elvis, appeared on the Gaither videos and was part of many Southern Gospel groups over the years was a good friend to Jesse.
