Wellness center further cements GMC’s image

MILLEDGEVILLE — It was only fitting that on an already celebratory day when head coach and athletic director Bert Williams picked up his 100th career win, Georgia Military College broke ground on an expansion project to set the school’s course for a number of years to come.

Saturday, GMC alumni joined supporters and school officials at the groundbreaking ceremony for the main campus’ $17 million Health and Wellness Center. According to GMC President Maj. Gen. Peter Boylan (Ret.), the project is  “the capstone on the growth we’ve accomplished these past few years: the new prep school, the added technology and classrooms, the performing arts center ... all made possible through the generosity of the supporters of GMC.”

The launch of this new expansion comes two years after the completion of the prep school’s Usery Hall, which allowed for all grades — six through 12 — to be housed in the same building for the first time. The new wellness center will further cement GMC’s impression into the local community and likely serve as an added amenity for incoming students to the historic campus.

Construction plans include a three-level addition to the Cordell Events Center and 56,250 square feet of new fitness space alongside what will be a full renovation of the existing fitness center. The new Health and Wellness Center will house six classrooms for health and wellness instruction, an athletic health care and training lab, three separate spaces dedicated to weight and cardio training, an elevated track, staff offices and locker rooms to support all the prep school and junior college students and visiting teams.

The project’s second phase will include the addition of an 1,800 square-foot convocation center, as well as additional instruction spaces, physical training spaces and offices to support the instruction.

While steeped in history and tradition, the expansion will provide the campus with much-needed space and also demonstrates the school leadership’s vision for the future. It will also help to enhance and extend beautification efforts in the downtown area upon completion, adding to GMC’s community imprint.

Whether utilizing its facilities for community-focused programs and events, contributing in-kind to the progression of local literacy efforts or other projects, GMC has continued to extend the campus out into the community by working closely with volunteer projects — a testament to the college’s commitment to developing strong character in its students.

With this new addition, GMC is poised for even more significant growth for many years to come.
