Position Statement on Amendment 2

MILLEDGEVILLE — Amendment 2, which will be voted on in the upcoming election, is an important issue that has received very little attention.

In summary, it would let the state enter multi-year leases for office space. This would allow state government to enjoy the cost-savings created by commitment to a period of longer than 12 months and save taxpayers at least $66 million over 10 years according to the State Properties Commission.

While the state currently stays in any particular leased office space an average of 10.7 years, it is required to sign a new lease each year, paying a “one year” rather than “multi-year” rate for space.  It is simply common sense to allow the state to enter leases for more than one year, especially with the multiple oversight mechanisms included in the new law should it pass. Gov. Deal is supporting this amendment, as did the vast majority of the members of the State House and Senate when it was voted upon earlier this year.

The Georgia Chamber has taken a support position on this amendment and will be encouraging our members and grassroots network to vote yes on Amendment 2. The Milledgeville-Baldwin Chamber of Commerce also supports Amendment 2 and hopes that you will do that same. We hope that you will do the same.
