Get involved by cleaning up

MILLEDGEVILLE — Just in time for the start of fall and next month’s Deep Roots Festival, a local effort is helping to spruce up downtown. As downtown Milledgeville continues to be placed in the spotlight with the monthly First Friday features, the upcoming festival and alumni weekend events for Georgia Military College and Georgia College, this effort is certainly timely and one the entire downtown community should get behind.

Milledgeville Main Street will host a clean up day from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Hopefully, this clean up effort will spread to other areas of town and become widespread throughout the community.

The cleanup will consist of cleaning the alleyways and areas behind the downtown buildings. Volunteers will meet at the Milledgeville Main Street office located at 127 E. Hancock St. at 2 p.m. and are encouraged to bring gloves to the event. Volunteers from the Georgia College GIVE Center and other campus student organizations will also take part, signifying this event as a campus-community outreach effort as well.

While Milledgeville’s downtown is not by any means unkempt, it is only through all of our conscious effort to put trash in its proper place when we it see it that this can be maintained. We must remember that litter is not only unsightly and unsanitary, it also sends a negative message to visitors, particularly those stopping through town for the first time, who may get a bad first impression.

This weekend’s cleanup effort is not only a great way to send the right message about the importance of keeping the local community clean and positive, it is also a great way for local students and college-age volunteers to get involved in the community beyond campus. This is an opportunity to take pride in where you live and give back at the same time. Volunteers are still needed and are welcome to join in on the effort.

It doesn’t take a tremendous effort to have an impact on your community and how it looks, but it does take a conscious commitment.
