MILLEDGEVILLE —
James David Mills, 74, of Milledgeville, went home to the Lord Oct. 31, 2012. A loving husband, brother, father, grandfather, counselor, friend and mentor to many, he will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Williams Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 p.m. until the service hour.
Jim was born in Houston, Texas, Nov. 25, 1937, to Glessye Rose and Edwin David Mills, who lived in Harrisburg, Texas. He spent his childhood in Seabrook, Texas, graduating from Alvin High School and Rice University with a liberal arts degree. There he met the love of his life, Carolyne, at the campus library. They celebrated 55 years of marriage this year.
His many occupations have included: good humor ice cream man, bank repossessions, country club switchboard operator, cement mixer driver, hospital orderly, oil rig and pipe yard worker and drilling engineer. His career in oil, and their adventurous spirit, led the family to live in many countries all over the world. Jim and Carolyne were blessed with five daughters who he proudly raised to be brave, resilient, independent, intelligent, caring and passionate.
“Life expands in proportion to one’s courage,” and at 55, Jim changed his career and changed his life, receiving his master’s in psychology from Houston Baptist University. In 1988, they moved to Milledgeville where he turned to helping others through his counseling. Extending his care of people to volunteerism came easily, and he joined the Rotary in 1987, American Red Cross and was president of the Sons of the American Revolution local chapter. His work at the Red Cross expanded as he was promoted to leadership roles in Disaster Action Teams as he set up shelters and counseled emergency first responders, including the 9/11 port authority location and Hurricane Katrina. His Red Cross work was personally recognized by the president of the USA.
Always a student of life, he loved God, his friends and his family and led lessons at the Methodist church. He enjoyed many hobbies and travels, was an avid outdoorsman, tinkerer, photographer and rancher.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyne; sister, Glyssie; brothers, Dick and Joe; daughters and sons-in-law, Coco and Bob Brennan, Carolyne and Mike Digel, Cathy and John Wicks, Cari and Barry Reese and Connie Mills; grandchildren, Jennifer, Chance, Jessie, Hailey, James, Michael, Sarah, Julian and Liam; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Red Cross in Jim’s honor.
