On Thursday, June 25, 2009, William Wright (Bill) Fisher Sr., loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully in Milledgeville and went to be with his Lord and Savior, and the love of his life, his wife Margie, who passed away on June 11, 2009, in Milledgeville.
Bill was born in Richmond, Va., on Dec. 10, 1927, to the late Charles Page Fisher Sr., and Annie Wright Fisher.
First and foremost Bill had an unwavering commitment to his wife, his children and his grandchildren. He was never at a loss for words or opinions, and his deep southern drawl was fascinating to young and old alike, especially if he sang you a story. He told many a good story to many a person over the years.
Bill and Margie shared their lives together for more than 58 years, and much of that time was spent in Williamsburg, Va., as owners and operators of tourist homes, a motel and a campground. They first opened their home to vacationing tourists in Yorktown, Va., in 1956. They made friends from around the world that returned year after year to visit Colonial Williamsburg and the Fishers.
He was most proud of his ability to help children learn to read. He was voted Volunteer of the Year for the Johnston County, North Carolina Schools, when he and Margie lived in Benson, N.C. Bill was a devout Christian and a passionate Episcopalian, teaching Sunday school for many years. Bill was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Bill was employed as vice president with E W. Muller Construction Company in Newport News, Va., for more than 30 years until his retirement due to macular degeneration.
Along with his wife Margie and his parents, Bill was predeceased by his brother, Charles Page Fisher Jr.
Surviving are his son William W. (Bill) Fisher II and his wife Ilse of Milledgeville; his daughter, Margaret (Peggi) Meredith and her husband Dana of Coats, N.C., and his most beloved grandchildren, Emma and Max Fisher of Milledgeville, Michelle Meredith of Wilmington, N.C., Dana Meredith Jr. and wife Kim of Coats, N.C., Aaron Meredith and wife Sharon of Erwin, N.C.; and his beloved great-grandchildren, Dylan P. Meredith of Erwin, N.C., Mariah, Macey and William Meredith of Coats, N.C. Bill is also survived by his sister, Anne F. Keppler of Northampton, Mass., and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express sincere appreciation to the nursing and administrative staff of Chaplinwood Nursing Home in Milledgeville for their kind and compassionate care of Bill during his long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. To Sandra, Heather, Carol, Bonnie, Brandy, Debbie and Sylvia, a very special thank-you for your devotion to this wonderful man.
A memorial service and celebration of Bill and Margie’s life together is planned and will be held at a later date in Williamsburg, Va. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601-7633 or to the Macular Degeneration Foundation Inc., P.O.
