Faye Barr

MILLEDGEVILLE — Faye Tanner Barr died Dec. 3, 2012, at her home after a sudden illness. A memorial service will be held at the chapel of Moores Funeral Home Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at 2 p.m.  The family will greet friends from 1 p.m. until the services hour.

Born in Milledgeville on June 24, 1941, Dr. Barr was the daughter of Alvin Lee and Marteal Smith Tanner. She graduated from Baldwin High School in 1959 and from The Woman’s College of Georgia (now GCSU) in 1962. She earned her Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.

She had a distinguished career at Clayton State College where she served as chair of the Department of Social Sciences and as acting dean of the School of Arts and Sciences.

Her joys in life were her family, her friends, her church activities and her travels. Just last week she returned from spending an extended period with friends in Paris, France, where she reveled in the City of Lights. She and her late husband James also enjoyed excursions to various sites in the United States and abroad.

She is survived by her sister, Dale Tanner Tennille; her stepdaughters, Nina B. (Al) Toole and Darlene (Val) Barr; her grandsons, Kenneth (Tracy) Corbitt, James (Kristy) Corbitt, and Christopher (Lana) Corbitt; her great-grandchildren Katelynn and Devin Corbitt and Alexis Corbitt; and her longtime and dearest friend Martha Hampton.  Her nieces and nephews Terry Tennille, Robin Hemphill, Guy Tennille, Melanie Kelly and Lee Tennille and their families also survive. They all illuminated her life.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be made to Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF): P.O. Box 1032, Milledgeville, GA 31059; Class of 1963 Scholarship Fund at Georgia College: Campus Box 96, Milledgeville, GA 31061; Clayton State Retirees Graduate Scholarship Fund: c/o CSU Foundation, 2000 Clayton State Blvd., Morrow, GA 30260; or The First Baptist Church Missions Committee: P.O. 795, Milledgeville, GA 31059.
