ATLANTA — Emory University isn't getting just any kind of turkey for its campus wide Thanksgiving feast.
The Atlanta college will use the rare Heritage turkey in their meal Thursday as a way to promote the farms that raise and sell the birds. That particular kind of turkey was in danger of dying out a few years ago because farmers wouldn't breed them if they couldn't sell them.
Emory's sustainable food educator Julie Shaffer said the university is trying to help create a viable consumer market for the Heritage breeds by buying 1,600 pounds of the birds this year. Heritage turkeys are reminiscent of what most people think of as wild turkeys and they are among the oldest breeds in the count
