ATLANTA — Emory University will honor authors Alice Walker and Gloria Steinem, among others, during the annual James Weldon Johnson Medal ceremony this week.

The Atlanta university will host the event honoring Johnson, a writer and civil rights leader, at the Carter Center on Nov. 4.

Other recipients of the medal include U.S. Rep. John Lewis, a Democrat from Georgia who worked alongside Martin Luther King Jr., and Myrlie Evers Williams, widow of slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers. The list also includes Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin and former Coca-Cola Co. CEO E. Neville Isdell.

The medals were established in 1992 by the James Weldon Johnson Foundation to honor excellence in literature and journalism.
