DUBLIN — A Georgia Southern University student has been chosen to carry the Olympic torch next year as it makes its way through Canada to Vancouver for the Winter Games.
Sophomore Crystal Hardy will be part of the torch relay on Jan. 18, 2010, in Calgary, Canada. The Dublin, Ga., native is majoring in American Sign Language at the south Georgia university.
She was chosen by the Coca-Cola Co. because of her volunteer work, including starting a recycling program in Laurens County schools and organizing a community-wide volunteer project to rebuild a rundown playground.
She is one of 20 U.S. residents chosen by Coca-Cola to carry the torch. Others include Olympic gold medalists Shawn Johnson and Steven Lopez.
